There are a flurry of activities and opportunities available for students at each ASA meeting. Be sure to look over the list below for what not to miss as a student at an ASA meeting!

STUDENT REGISTRATION PACKETS
When you check in at the upcoming meeting of the Society, you will receive a copy of the Student Guide in your registration packet. In the guide, you’ll find great information on the Society in general and the conference in general. Also included in the student registration packet will be an ASA Student Member sticker to be placed on the provided name tag. Although the sticker is optional, the goal is to facilitate networking between students and other members of the Society.

STUDENT RECEPTION AND STUDENT OUTING
Each ASA meeting provides social activities for students including the Student Reception and the Student Outing. The Reception is a light dinner event that offers an opportunity for students to meet informally with fellow students and other members of the Acoustical Society, introduces the Student Council, and presents door prizes. All students are encouraged to attend, especially students who are first time attendees or those from smaller universities. The Outing is an even more informal event in which a local bar or pub is chosen for the students to go eat and drink and meet each other further. Check the E-Zine or Latest News page before heading to the meeting to find times & locations of these social events.

FELLOWSHIP/GRANT WORKSHOP SERIES
This series provides information and resources to students about applying for scholarships and grants. One previous workshop hosted presentations by representatives from organizations offering funding in areas related to acoustics. Another analysed examples of actual grant proposals by ASA members to recommend dos and don'ts in grant writing. Ideas for future workshops are welcomed. In the meantime, visit the Fellowship/Grant section of the ASA Student Zone: the most comprehensive listing of undergrad, grad, and postdoc funding opportunities in acoustics. Good luck!

NEED A ROOMMATE FOR THE NEXT ASA MEETING?
ASA will compile a list of those who wish to share a hotel room and its cost. To be listed, send your name, telephone number, e-mail address, gender, smoker or nonsmoker preference to the Acoustical Society of America, preferably by e-mail [asa@aip.org] or by postal mail to Acoustical Society of America, Attn.: Room Sharing, Suite 1NO1, 2 Huntington Quadrangle, Melville, NY 11747-4502. The responsibility for completing any arrangements for room sharing rests solely with the participating individuals. The deadline for submission will be posted before each meeting in the E-Zine and the Latest News page.

ALTERNATIVE HOUSING FOR STUDENTS
Not all students get their hotel expenses paid, and even with the ASA discount the meeting hotels are not cheap. For most meetings, the student council provides a list of alternative (read: cheaper!) housing based on the knowledge of colleagues from that location. Be sure to look for this list before each meeting, in the E-Zine and the Latest News page.

BE SURE TO MEET YOUR STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES!
We are here to represent you. Please contact us before and/or at the meeting; let us know what you think and what we can do for you. We report on behalf of the ASA student members in our field at the technical committee meetings, and we organize new student-related programs at the conferences. We appreciate your input! See this website's Student Council page for links to your representatives' contact information and photos so you can recognize them at the meeting.
STUDENT BULLETIN BOARD
Information about all things student related can be found on the bulletin board near the registration desk. Be sure to check it out!

STUDENTS MEET ASA MEMBERS FOR LUNCH
The ASA Education Committee provides a way for a student to meet one-on-one with a member of the Acoustical Society over lunch (or a pair of students is acceptable too, if desired). The purpose is to make it easier for students to meet and interact with members at ASA Meetings. Each lunch pairing is arranged separately. Students who wish to participate should contact David Blackstock, University of Texas at Austin, through email [dtb@mail.utexas.edu],  telephone 512-343-8248 (alternative number: 512-835-3374). Please give Dr. Blackstock your name, university, department, degree you are seeking (BS, MS, or PhD), research field, acoustical interests, and days during the upcoming meeting that you are free for lunch. The sign-up deadline is ten days before the start of the Meeting, but an earlier sign-up is strongly encouraged. Each participant pays for his/her own meal.

THE STUDENT COUNCIL MENTOR AWARD
The Student Council periodically presents an award to recognize individuals who have served as exemplary mentors. The Mentor Award is designed to honor exceptional ability in guiding the academic and/or professional growth of students and junior colleagues. Any ASA member (not only students), other than students currently serving on the Student Council, may submit a nomination for this award. More information and directions for submitting a nomination can be found on the Mentor Award page.

VOLUNTEER FOR EDUCATION IN ACOUSTICS
At each ASA meeting, informal demo sessions on several basic acoustical concepts are provided to high school students in the local area. Student volunteers are needed to facilitate these hands-on demos. Interested? Please contact Doug Wilcox at daw284@psu.edu.

STUDENT TRANSPORTATION SUBSIDY
A student transportation subsidies fund has been established to provide limited funds to students to partially defray transportation expenses to meetings. Students presenting papers who propose to travel in groups using economical ground transportation will be given first priority to receive subsidies, although these conditions are not mandatory. No reimbursement is intended for the cost of food or housing. The amount granted each student depends on the number of requests received. To apply for a subsidy, submit a proposal by the deadline (announced before each meeting in the E-Zine and the Latest News page): Jolene Ehl, ASA, Suite 1NO1, 2 Huntington Quadrangle, Melville, NY 11747-4502, Tel: 516-576-2359, Fax: 516-576-2377, Email: jehl@aip.org. Email contact is preferred. The proposal should include your status as a student; whether you have submitted an abstract; whether you are a member of ASA; method of travel; if traveling by auto; whether you will travel alone or with other students; names of those traveling with you; and approximate cost of transportation.
