STUDENT CHAPTERS
ASA Student Chapters are being started that are geared towards student-type activities, such as technical talks, tours, professional development, resume building, and academic enrichment. The Chapters will be a great opportunity for students to network, exchange information and ideas, and learn more about the world of acoustics on a local level.
New policy was approved last Fall by the Society to include Student Chapters under the Regional Chapter umbrella, and the first Student Chapter at the University of Nebraska was approved at the ASA Meeting in New York. A full procedure for establishing your own chapter will be available on-line soon! To get started now, or for more information, you can contact either the Regional Chapters Chair, Beth McLaughlin [mclaughlinea@npt.nuwc.navy.mil], or the Student Council Student Chapter Liaison, Connor Duke [connorduke@hotmail.com]. The ASA Regional and Student Chapters webpage is here.
STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION
The Technical Committee on Architectural Acoustics and the National Council of Acoustical Consultants sponsor a student design competition during each Spring meeting of the Society.
The purpose of this design competition is to encourage students enrolled in architecture, Architectural Engineering, and other University curriculums that involve building design and/or acoustics to express their knowledge of architectural acoustics and building noise control in the schematic design of portions of a building where acoustical considerations are of primary importance.
The submitted designs will be judged by a panel of professional architects and acoustical consultants. An award of $1,000 will be made to the submitter(s) of the design judged "firsthonors." Four awards of $500 each will be made to the submitters of four entries judged "commendation."
More information can be found through the main ASA website.
STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION
Many of the technical committees of the Society give awards for student papers presented in sessions organized by that particular TC.
Selection of the award winner will be based on the quality of the presented paper, considering both the content and its delivery. All students who wish to participate in the competition for these awards should indicate their intention at the bottom of the abstract submitted for the meeting. Winners are listed on the Awards & Reports page after they are announced.
The award information for each TC changes for each meeting, so be sure to check the main ASA website for more details.
